Project Description

NIDIAG – Syndromic Approach to Neglected Infectious Diseases (NID) at Primary Health Care Level: An International Collaboration on Integrated Diagnostic-Treatment Platforms

Neglected Infectious Diseases (NIDs) such as trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, and soil-transmitted helminthiasis receive less than 5% of global tropical disease research funding. To address this, the EU-funded NIDIAG initiative brought together clinical epidemiologists and diagnostics development experts to introduce technological innovations in NID-related clinical care diagnostics. NIDIAG is an acronym that stands for “Syndromic Approach to Neglected Infectious Diseases (NID) at Primary Health Care Level: An International Collaboration on Integrated Diagnostic-Treatment Platforms,” and it is based at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp, Belgium.

This was a European research network with thirteen lead investigators and partners from ten countries collaborating, including the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Belgium and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom (LSHTM). The NIDIAG consortium’s goal was to bridge the gap between existing technological innovations in diagnostics and clinical care to improve the quality of NID care at the health care level in resource-limited settings. The NIDIAG consortium had published 49 scholarly papers as of 2019.
